We are bombarded with information everyday. At this day and age, beauty information is so readily available where the desired beauty data can be accessed with a simple click of a button.
But the sad truth is that not all the information are facts, and in most instances, reports and news are conflicting – coffee is good for you one day and the next day a research will counter that coffee is bad.
To sort out the beauty myths from the facts, we look at the top 10 beauty questions.
1. Pimples develop overnight
Myth – Pimples take at least 1 week to form. If you wake up in the morning with a zit on your forehead, it is probably caused by a blocked pore with a build up of sebum 2 weeks ago that has become infected.
You go to bed with skin clear as a newborn’s and wake up with an angry red zit on your forehead — but that pimple is no overnight star; it was actually days in the making.
2. Eating Junk Food, Fast Food and Oily Foods will Cause Breakouts
Myth: There are no direct correlation with junk food and acne.
Over production in sebum, hormonal fluctuations, bacteria and inflammation causes acne.
However, over indulgence with oily fatty foods is not ideal for ones health and can lead to other more serious health issues such as obesity, high blood pressure or high cholesterol etc.
3. Laser Hair Removal is Permanent
Myth – Laser hair removal only gets rid of up to 80% of hair. One reason for this is that hair grows in cycles. Since some will be dormant at the time of your appointments, the laser can’t zap every hair at every session
Repeated treatments will help reduce more hair but it is not permanent as many believe. The good news is that hair that grows back after treatment will be alot finer and less dense.
4. The Sun Will help reduce acne
Myth – You may look alot better immediately after spending time in the sun due to the masking effect from the sun redness and tan. But long UV exposure will cause an increase in oil sebum production and constant exposure can also leave you with dark pigmentation marks.
5. Facial Exercises Helps You Look Younger
Myth – Facial exercises is not going to tighten up and fill in the fine lines and wrinkles.
Unlike other parts of the body where we can do weight or resistance exercises to tone up the muscles, we really have no way of doing weight exercises on our face.
The opposite is true. Repetitive motions using your facial muscles — such as frowning, laughing and smiling can actually bring more fine lines out in the face.
